A biopic about Freddie Mercury will see Mr Robot actor Rami Malek play the late Queen rocker as production finally forges ahead on the long-awaited film, according to reports.

Sacha Baron Cohen was previously attached to the role of the British music icon, but he pulled out in 2013 over creative differences.

US actor Malek has won a handful of top industry awards for his part in the critically-acclaimed thriller-drama series, and will lead the biopic, titled Bohemian Rhapsody.

X-Men director and producer Bryan Singer has been slated to direct the picture, which will tell the story of the band and its flamboyant lead singer.

The news of Singer and Malek's involvement in the picture was reported by Deadline, which added that it will be created jointly by 20th Century Fox and New Regency after being in development for eight years.

Singer appeared to confirm he is behind the production of the film by posting a picture of Queen on his Instagram page.

Along with the image, he wrote: #bohemianrhapsody #queen #freddiemercury #brianmay #rogertaylor #johndeacon #grahamking #fox #newregency Looking forward to @ramimalek @whoismrrobot playing #Freddie."

In 2010, Queen's guitarist Brian May confirmed that Baron Cohen would play the role of Mercury, but three years later the Ali G actor parted company with the film-makers.

The comedy actor revealed earlier this year that he stepped away from the project over a disagreement about the storyline with an unnamed member of Queen.

Following Baron Cohen's departure from the picture, James Bond actor Ben Whishaw was linked to the role.

Frost/Nixon writer Peter Morgan was previously said to be preparing the script, but Deadline now reports that The Theory Of Everything's screenwriter Anthony McCarten is behind it.

Graham King will produce the biopic along with Queen manager Jim Beach, and will work with Queen's May and Roger Taylor as music producers.

Bohemian Rhapsody is expected to begin shooting early in 2017.
