Rampling's wrist a twist of fate

Charlotte Rampling broke her wrist before she started making I, Anna

Charlotte Rampling has revealed she incorporated an accidental broken wrist into her role in new film I, Anna.

The veteran actress plays divorcee Anna, who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation after a man she meets at a speed dating event is found bludgeoned to death in his flat in the film, directed by her son Barnaby Southcombe.

Charlotte revealed: "It came about because I broke my wrist two days before we were due to start shooting so Barnaby had to find a way with the screenwriter to make it work in the script and they found something very brilliant, a manifestation of something.

"She doesn't remember how she breaks this wrist which is all part of the story and part of the strange state that she's put herself in because she's too frightened to remember what she's done."

The actress said she was drawn to the character because she was a "flawed femme fatale".

"She's a very cinematographic character, but in her reality she's a very wounded woman, she's a very deeply distressed person really, very devastated by a relationship that is no longer working.

"Because it is film noir and it's shot film noir, you have this woman that seems very mysterious, that seems slightly fatale, but there are secrets behind it."

:: I, Anna is released on December 7.
