Ramsay film up for Cannes top prize

Scottish director Lynne Ramsay's new film is in the running for the Cannes Film Festival's top prize.

Her adaptation of the best-selling novel We Need to Talk About Kevin, by London-based Lionel Shriver, is one of 19 films shortlisted for the prestigious Palme d'Or.

Lynne, who was born in Glasgow and educated in Edinburgh, is up against Spanish film maker Pedro Almodovar and Hollywood veteran Terrence Malick.

The film is about two parents trying to come to terms with their son's involvement in a high school massacre.

Also in the running for the Palme d'Or is Lars von Trier, whose film Melancholia stars Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be shown at the festival out of competition.

The latest instalment in the popular series stars Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and veteran British star Ian McShane as Blackbeard.
