Robert Redford has signed up for crime movie The Old Man And The Gun.

The two-time Oscar winner will take the starring role in the movie, which will be directed by Ain't Them Bodies Saints' filmmaker David Lowery, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Redford will also be a producer on the film, which is based on a 2003 article in The New Yorker.

The article was about a bank robber who was born in 1920 and spent most of his life in jail or escaping from jail.

The 76-year-old star was last seen on the big screen in Lions For Lambs in 2007 but now has a new film out in the US, political action thriller The Company You Keep.

The Sundance Founder has also signed up for Captain America sequel The Winter Soldier.
