Rhys Meyers joins Stonewall film

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is to star in gay rights movie Stonewall.

The Tudors star has officially joined the cast of Roland Emmerich's film, which will focus on the 1969 police raid at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, a mob-owned gay bar.

Ron Perlman and Joey King have also signed up.

The newcomers join War Horse star Jeremy Irvine, who plays a young man called Danny Winters, who is kicked out of home and flees to New York, leaving behind his beloved sister (Joey).

He then experiences a political awakening in the backdrop of the riots sparked by the raid.

Production has already started on Stonewall, which is expected to be released in 2016.
