Rhys' nerves over Marks film role

Rhys Ifans plays Howard Marks in Mr Nice

Rhys Ifans has admitted being "nervous" over portraying his friend Howard Marks in Mr Nice.

The Welsh actor plays the former international drug smuggler and spy in the biopic and says he felt under pressure to deliver a winning performance.

"I am nervous, you know - I think it's a first possibly in the history of film, you'd imagine it would be very, very strange - it kind of was but because of our relationship, it was amusing in the right way," he said.

"But of course, I felt a huge sense of responsibility because if Howard hated this film, I would have basically been responsible for ruining his life. You really don't want that," he added.

Luckily for Rhys, Howard chose to have a hands-off role in the production.

"I didn't suggest which bits should be included or which bits should be left out. I'm very happy I didn't say anything. It certainly wouldn't have made the film any better," he said.

:: Mr Nice opens in cinemas on October 8.
