Rogue One: A Star Wars Story tops UK's film openings for year

Star Wars spin-off Rogue One has had the biggest film opening of 2016 in the UK.

The film, which is set before the first instalment of the franchise, A New Hope, has raked in an estimated £17 million at the UK and Irish box office over the four days since it opened on December 15, according to Disney.

That makes it the second biggest December opening of all time in the UK, behind last year's Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

The Force Awakens went on to make 2.07 billion US dollars (£1.67 billion) worldwide.

In the US, Rogue One scored an estimated 155 million dollars (£125 million) in its first few days of release, to pull in a 290.5 million dollars (£234.9 million) at the global box office.

It will have to make more than £47.9 million to be the biggest film of the year in the UK.

That record is currently held by Bridget Jones's Baby, which was released in September.

Disney's reboot of The Jungle Book, which combined a live action Mowgli with computer-generated animals, pulled in £46.2 million and Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory reaped £42.8 million.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is out now.
