Ronan, Gleeson cast in Brooklyn

Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson are to star in period drama Brooklyn.

The New York-born Irish actress will play a young woman who returns to her home country of Ireland from Brooklyn after a family tragedy during the early 1950s. As she repeatedly postpones her return to America, she soon finds herself torn between two men and two countries.

About Time star Domhnall will play her Irish love interest, while Emory Cohen has been cast as her Italian-American beau.

The film, which also stars Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters, has started its three-week shoot in Ireland, in Enniscorthy, Wexford and Dublin. It will then move to Montreal, Canada, for four weeks from the end of April.

John Crowley will direct the big-screen adaptation of Colm Toibin's novel, which has been written by Nick Hornby.

Saoirse, who was last seen in Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel and had a cameo in Muppets Most Wanted, will next star in Ryan Gosling's directorial debut, How To Catch A Monster.
