Russell promises 'magic' new movies

David O Russell has revealed he is already working on new movies and that they are full of "magic".

The American Hustle director is still a month away from walking the red carpet at the Oscars, where the film is nominated for 10 awards, but he is not wasting any time.

He was honoured at the Santa Barbara Film Festival with the Outstanding Director Award and speaking before the ceremony, he revealed he has plenty more stories to tell.

"I am writing movies about people and families and magic, I can't give my secret ingredients away but I will work diligently to be here again."

American Hustle - which stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro - is nominated for best picture, best director, best original screenplay and string of acting awards for the cast.

It has already scored the top honour at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Golden Globes, and the Silver Linings Playbook director said he could not believe his luck.

"I feel blessed to be able to make stories about people and passion and what is worth living for and what people survive and what they go through, but also what they love about life and that is what these movies are about.

"I feel blessed to work with these casts and that there are people that will finance these movies and audiences that will go to them. I think we have shown that audiences love movies about people and life if the films are passionate and propulsive and it has been a real privilege to make them and I want to keep earning that privilege to do that by writing stories and trying to be worthy of the cast."

David added he isn't letting the awards buzz turn his head.

"You just have to be happy to be part of any awards season and if you end up in this part of the season and everything else is gravy, you can never count on anything but it's exciting to be a part of it and it makes cinema exciting. I grew up watching the Academy Awards on TV and it was exciting."

Other celebrities due to be honoured in Santa Barbara include Cate Blanchett, Leonard DiCaprio and Oprah Winfrey.
