Zoe Saldana has insisted she will "honour" Nina Simone despite the criticism over her casting in a film about the legendary singer.
The Avatar actress insisted she will do the late soul songstress justice when portrays her in the upcoming biopic, in spite of some people complaining she does not look the part.
"Let me tell you, if Elizabeth Taylor can be Cleopatra, I can be Nina - I'm sorry," she told Allure.
"It doesn't matter how much backlash I will get for it. I will honour and respect my black community because that's who I am."
Aretha Franklin has said she has doubts about whether Zoe can pull it off.
"I did know Nina and I would have liked to see someone with a little more of a likeness and who hopefully played the piano. But I don't know Ms Saldana's work and Hollywood can do a lot of things in terms of changing your features and all of that," she said.
Zoe - who stripped off for a photo shoot in the magazine's June issue - also joked she has no plans to date another actor, after her split from Bradley Cooper earlier this year.
"Been there, done that, got the T-shirt," she said.
The 34-year-old also described herself as "androgynous" and teased about her sexuality: "(I might) end up with a woman raising my children... That's how androgynous I am! I was raised that open."
