Sarah Polley scoops top film award

Sarah Polley previously served on the Cannes Film Festival jury, alongside Stephen Frears

Sarah Polley has scooped a top Canadian film award for her new documentary.

The Dawn Of The Dead star's film, Stories We Tell, which chronicles the story of her family and reveals that she was born as the result of her mother's affair, won the Toronto Film Critics Association's 100,000 dollar best Canadian movie gong.

The memoir beat animal documentary Bestiaire, directed by Denis Cote, and hockey comedy Goon, made by Michael Dowse

Canadian actress and filmmaker Sarah was also presented with the Allan King Documentary Award, reported the Vancouver Sun.

Accepting the gong, the star, who had her first child in February, said: "I just want to say that this is a beautiful end to the best year of my life, so thank you."

It was the second time Sarah, 34, had been honoured by the organisation. She also won for her first feature, the 2006 love story Away From Her.
