Shane Meadows hails leading lady

Shane Meadows said he was shocked Vicky McClure hadn't been offered more parts

Shane Meadows has said he is shocked at how his protege Vicky McClure failed to land big acting roles.

The director persuaded the actress to come out of the acting wilderness to reprise her role as This Is England character Lol for the TV spin-off, and the director said he was bemused by how some better-known actresses get more work.

"Some of the female actresses, I won't name names, but some of them are abysmal and get great work and you're going 'how is that possible when Vicky's stocking a Coke machine at her work?'" he said.

The new show, This Is England '86, sees Lol at the centre of the show, rather Thomas Turgoose's character Shaun, who was at the centre of the 2007 film.

"I would have always loved to have done something more with Lol in particular and I went round and spoke to Vicky and said 'how would you feel about this?' Vicky had retired really, not through wanting to, but just through not being able to afford to go to the minimal auditions that were coming her way," he said.

Vicky added: "I know how lucky I am. I'm genuinely lucky to have got this part. Shane has got the vision, he's got all the ideas, he knows what he's doing, I trust him with my life."

:: This Is England '86 begins on Channel 4/HD on September 7 at 10pm.
