The Sinister Six are headed for the big screen, with a spin-off film scheduled for 2016.

The original line-up of super-villains, consisting of Doctor Octopus, Electro (played by Jamie Foxx in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, Sandman and Vulture, will feature in their own movie.

The announcement by Sony's Columbia Pictures means that The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been pushed back to 2018 from its planned 2016 release.

Sinister Six, to be directed by Drew Goddard, is one of two spin-offs planned for the Spider-Man universe. No date has been set for the other offshoot in development, Venom.

Thomas Haden Church previously played Sandman in the 2007 feature film Spider-Man 3.

In The Amazing Spider-Man 3's place, Sony will release Uncharted, an action film based on the PlayStation video game.
