Smith, Flemyng for Star Wars film?

Matt Smith is the latest actor to be linked to the new Star Wars film.

The actor, who steps down from his Doctor Who part later this year, "went in" for a role in Episode VII, according to website Bleeding Cool, although it isn't known whether he was having a meeting or auditioning.

The site reports that the news came from a "fairly well-placed source".

There have also been recent rumours that Jason Flemyng will be involved in director JJ Abrams' film after he reportedly posted a picture on Instagram of what appeared to be a Star Wars script.

The image, which has since been removed, showed a red document with a beer on top and was captioned: "Pint of Stella and Star Wars script! That's me sorted till 5!"

Matt and Jason join a long list of stars rumoured to be in the running for the sci-fi movie, including Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Alex Pettyfer and Michael B Jordan.

It is also thought that original cast members Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will be back, and film bosses have been holding open auditions to fill two other roles.

Star Wars: Episode VII is due to be released in 2015.
