Smith: I wanted to be Django lead

Will Smith says he wanted more of a lead role in Django Unchained

Will Smith has revealed that he turned down Django Unchained because he felt his character wasn't solely the lead.

The Men In Black star - who had been Quentin Tarantino's first choice to play Django in the Oscar-winning spaghetti Western, which Jamie Foxx stepped into - admitted he decided to pass on the role because he had to play second fiddle to Christoph Waltz's bounty hunter character.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly: "Django wasn't the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead. The other character was the lead!"

Will even pleaded with the director to give him a more central role in the story before he made his decision: "I was like, 'No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!'"

The actor, however, said there are no bad feelings between himself and Quentin, adding: "I thought it was brilliant. Just not for me."

The filmmaker previously revealed he had met with the 44-year-old, saying: "It just wasn't 100 per cent right, and we didn't have time to try to make it that way."

Will - who reprised his role as Agent J in Men In Black 3 - will next star with son Jaden in M Night Shyamalan's sci-fi thriller After Earth, and will also appear in Akiva Goldsman's Winter's Tale alongside Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe.
