Strictly's Ed Balls bids for Bafta with his high-energy salsa

The former shadow chancellor’s energetic salsa to the Psy hit was one of the big moments of last year’s BBC1 show.

Ed Balls’ Gangnam Style performance on Strictly Come Dancing is up for a Bafta – but will be vying against baby marine iguanas on Planet Earth II.

The former shadow chancellor’s energetic salsa to the Psy hit was one of the big moments of last year’s BBC1 show.

It has been shortlisted for the Must-See Moment gong at this year’s TV Baftas.

Other scenes in the running include Michelle Obama joining James Corden’s Late Late Show to belt out hits on Carpool Karaoke.

EastEnders’ star Danny Dyer is also up for the award, for his reaction to the discovery that he is descended from William the Conqueror, Edward III and Thomas Cromwell.

The moment that newly hatched baby iguanas are chased by racer snakes on Planet Earth II is also shortlisted.

Game Of Thrones’ Battle Of The Bastards scene, featuring Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow, and crime drama Line Of Duty’s “urgent exit required” episode, the series finale, complete the shortlist.

The award is the only one of the Virgin TV British Academy Television Awards – to be hosted this year by Sue Perkins – voted for by the British public.

Bafta chief executive Amanda Berry said: “The shortlist demonstrates an incredible range of unforgettable TV moments from last year and I’m sure it will be tough to pick out a favourite.”

The awards take place on Sunday May 14 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.
