Tatum's trouble with Effects words

Channing Tatum stars in Steven Soderbergh's new film Side Effects

Channing Tatum has revealed that changing his accent for Side Effects was a big challenge.

The Magic Mike star from Alabama had to amend his southern dialect to play convicted financial trader Martin Taylor in Steven Soderbergh's psychological thriller.

"Steven was pretty adamant about me changing the way I speak. It was a definite character trait because he's from the south and doesn't speak very correctly, I guess, so we tried to change that," he said.

"It was ever so slightly, that it was harder than I've done in other movies, doing just accents. Those are so much easier. There was somebody there reminding me of every single little thing."

Channing, who stars alongside Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the film, admitted that there would be times when he would just give up.

"Sometimes we would just change the sentence because it would be easier for me to say. I would apologise, and say, 'I'm not good enough to do this'," he recalled.

Side Effects marks Channing and Steven's third collaboration, following their previous work on Haywire and Magic Mike.

"It's such a relaxed, insanely creative experience. It doesn't trip you out - as soon as we get on set, I think, 'This is so easy' - not in regards with the work that we're doing, but the vibe. And you just keep on wanting to do it again," he said of their reunion.

:: Side Effects is in cinemas now.
