The Lego Movie boosts toy firm

The Lego Movie has helped the building brick company become the world's biggest-selling toy firm.

Sales received such a massive boost from products linked to the computer animated adventure comedy - which featured the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks and Morgan Freeman - that Lego has even overtaken Barbie doll-maker Mattel.

The Danish firm said revenues soared by 11 per cent in the first six months of 2014 to 11.5 billion kroner (£1.22 billion), marginally higher than the figure reported by its Fisher-Price and Matchbox rival last month.

Chief financial officer John Goodwin said: "Lego Movie products provided a significant boost to our sales during the first half of 2014."

He said the company was hopeful that the lift to sales from the Warner Brothers' film will continue following its release on DVD.

The Lego Movie went down a storm at the box office and with critics when it was released this year.

A sequel, titled The Lego Movie 2 is scheduled to be released in 2017.
