The Martian beckons for Matt Damon

Matt Damon could be starring in sci-fi thriller The Martian.

The Elysium star is reportedly being considered to take the leading role in the 20th Century Fox film, although he is not officially attached yet, reported The Wrap.

While the Oscar-winning actor could be on his way in, Drew Goddard has pulled out of directing the movie. It is rumoured that his possible involvement in the Sinister Six spin-off film and Netflix's Daredevil series might have played a part in his decision.

Based on Andy Weir's e-book and described as a cross between Apollo 13 and Cast Away, The Martian follows an astronaut who has to figure out how to survive on Mars and return to Earth after he gets stranded on the red planet.

Matt has been enjoying a streak of sci-fi and space outings, following his starring turns in Elysium, Terry Gilliam's The Zero Theorem and Christopher Nolan's upcoming Interstellar.

The 43-year-old also reunited with his Ocean's co-star and friend George Clooney on historical thriller The Monuments Men.
