The Princess Bride heads for stage

The Princess Bride is being adapted for the stage by Disney.

The book was written in 1973 by William Goldman, who adapted it for the 1987 film starring Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, alongside stars including Billy Crystal, Mel Smith, Peter Cook and Fred Savage.

Now Disney Theatrical Productions has announced plans to adapt the novel and screenplay into a stage production.

Alan Horn, chairman of Walt Disney Studios who helped develop the original screen adaptation, said: "To now have a stage production of this film in development at Disney is honestly a dream come true. My involvement in The Princess Bride goes back to 1987 and it has always been close to my heart."

The beloved romantic comedy about Westley and Princess Buttercup has gone on to become a cult hit and much loved family classic.

The creative team and timetable for the project have yet to be determined.
