Top entertainment award for De Niro

Robert De Niro is to become only the fifth person in history to receive a prestigious entertainment award.

The Raging Bull actor will be presented with the coveted Entertainment Icon Award from The Friars Club at its annual gala later this year, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The honour has previously only been given to Tinseltown legends Douglas Fairbanks, Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra and Tom Cruise in the club's 109-year history.

Friars Club Abbot Jerry Lewis said De Niro - whose screen career spans almost 50 years - was picked because "he is the reason we have the words 'great actor'."

De Niro, 70, said: "I'm very happy to be part of an evening that raises money for such good causes. Thank you, Friars!

"Who am I giving an award to?"

De Niro will be given his gong at a ceremony at New York City's Waldorf Astoria Hotel on October 7.

The organisation is a private club in New York which is known for its risque celebrity roasts.
