Kate Winslet is set to star in period drama The Dressmaker.

The Oscar-winning actress has signed on to lead Jocelyn Moorhouse's big-screen adaptation of Rosalie Ham's novel, reported Screen Daily.

In the 1950s-set movie, Kate will play Tilly, an "avenging angel" who returns home to her remote Australian country town, after fleeing when she was accused of murder as a child.

Now a successful dressmaker, she liberates and empowers the town's women with her wit and fashionable designs - while waiting to exact revenge on those who wronged her.

Shooting is expected to begin in Australia in the autumn.

Kate, last seen in Movie 43, will next star in Jason Reitman's drama Labour Day with Josh Brolin, and the big-screen adaptation of Veronica Roth's futuristic novel Divergent.

The 37-year-old, who married Richard Branson's nephew Ned Rocknroll in December 2012, has been filming Alan Rickman's period drama A Little Chaos, which also stars Stanley Tucci and Matthias Schoenaerts.
