Winterbottom wants Promised Land

Michael Winterbottom revealed he still hopes to make his drama The Promised Land one day

Michael Winterbottom has revealed that The Promised Land is still on hold.

Colin Firth, Jim Sturgess and Matthew Macfadyen were expected to star in the political thriller, based on two British police officers hunting Zionist militant Avraham Stern and set in 1930s Palestine.

Michael admitted: "Not much is happening unfortunately. It's been knocking around for a few years. I would love to make The Promised Land.

"This is a story set in 1930s Palestine and I think it's a great story, it's a true story. But unfortunately I can't persuade anyone else that it is."

The Trishna director - who is starting post-production on his as-yet-untitled film about porn baron Paul Raymond starring Steve Coogan, formerly known as The King Of Soho - is also preparing to begin Here And There.

The drama, which he started in 2007 and is set over five years, stars John Simm as a man imprisoned for drug-smuggling and follows his relationship with his wife, played by Shirley Henderson.

Scenes have been shot over that time period to portray an authentic ageing process.

"The reason why I did Here And There, the film that I'm just starting now, is that time passing is a difficult thing," he said.

"Why do films have to be shot over several weeks and you have to somehow show a whole year, five years or ten years in passing with costumes? Why not make films a different way and see time passing in a more organic and natural way?"

::Trishna is released by Artificial Eye on DVD and Blu-ray now.
