Going for X Factor glory: Eoghan Quigg

Going for X Factor glory: Eoghan Quigg

Dungiven was today gearing up for one of the biggest nights in its history as local lad Eoghan Quigg prepares for X Factor glory.

With only 24 hours to go to the live final in London, thousands of supporters of the teenage boy are expected to descend upon his home town tomorrow night.

Most of Eoghan’s close family will be travelling to London for the final, including his mother and father, Denise and Chris and younger brothers, Dylan and Calum. But his new-born baby sister Chrissie Mia will stay at home with Eoghan’s aunt Carol O’Kane.

And dozens more relatives from his extended family will pack into St Canice’s Hall in the town to watch the final on a large screen.

It is also expected that bus loads of supporters will arrive in Dungiven from across the province to cheer on the 16-year-old.

In nearby Londonderry, the X Factor will broadcast a live feed from the Playhouse at St Columb’s.

And throughout Derry and Dungiven, pubs and clubs are expected to be thronged with fans hoping to cheer Eoghan on to win the competition.

Colm McGuigan, from St Canice’s GAA club in Dungiven, said the excitement was palpable in the town.

“The club itself only holds about 300 people so we will have a huge screen outside in the car park and we’re trying to organise with Limavady Borough Council to have more big screens in the sports pavilion nearby.

“We’ve heard that there’ll be bus loads of people coming into the town tomorrow so we’re expecting the place to be packed.

“We’ve had enquiries from Belfast and beyond. So many people seem to be interested in coming here to watch the final.

“It’s brilliant for Dungiven. Eoghan has done us proud.”

The Mayor of Limavady Borough Council, Brenda Chivers, said everyone in the area was on countdown to the big night.

“We’re all so excited, it’s brilliant,” she said.

“Every week I’ve been at St Canice’s watching it and I’ll be there again this weekend.

“Eoghan’s going to do it.”

St Patrick’s principal Anne Sands is travelling to London to support her star pupil, although she has not been allocated a ticket to the final.

A spokeswoman for the X Factor said tickets for the show were “like gold dust”.

Back in Dungiven, some of Eoghan’s older relatives will be looking after all of his young cousins left behind while aunt Carol is expected to travel to Derry for the live feed with Eoghan’s baby sister Chrissie Mia.

“It’s going to be some night. We’re all incredibly proud of Eoghan. He’s a great kid, what you see with him is what you get. He’s just so down-to-earth,” she said.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of him.”

Meanwhile it’s been revealed that Eoghan will duet with recently reformed Irish band Boyzone in the final.

Alexandra Burke will sing with another Irish band, Westlife, while JLS have struck gold with superstar Rihanna.

Last year Leon Jackson’s performance with Kylie Minogue is thought to have contributed to his victory.

Liam talks a lot of sense. I'm sick of all the hype! Lets hear them sing without the backing and studio voice fixing then we can decide who has the X Factor. As for me it's JLS. Good luck boys.

I think it is clear to see that in the modern popular music society, progammes like the X Factor are the new form of launching pad for acts such as Leon, Leona and now Eoghan. The musical development arena had to eveolve like every other sector of modern business. The people commenting on this page may not appreciate this sort of music but they have to understand the diversity of society and that a lot of people will love this music; Especially young girls and I personally believe it is a healthier interest than many others currently being adopted by the age group so I for one endorse it. Eoghan seems like a nice young man, pleasant, friendly, mannerly and an entertainer. So lets please not slag off an amabassador for Northern Ireland in an era where the community gets so much bad press already

Am enjoying the Richard and Liam show much more more than Trash Factor! Every year its the same drivel - the public all getting excited about nothing, while Simon Squarehead, Danni Robot, Troll Walsh and Cheryl (she's ok) get paid big money for talking about the same drivel!

But I'm excited about The Killers coming to Belfast next year!

Vote for Eoghan mmmmmmmm, he's doin it for Ireland & will never forget about County Derry - hey wee man good luck but i'll not be voting because you couldn't give us people a mention in Northern Ireland & County Londonderry. Agree with Michael, essential saturday night viewing for us all but a load of nonsense, Snow Patrol never had to win some pointless "talent" show.

Michael, I never have and never will vote for anyone in the X-Factor. Yes, I've had a small punt on JLS just for an interest but under no circumstances will I lift the phone to vote. I know, as well as many, that the show is fixed.
MY WIFE (maybe you should try and get one yourself) and I enjoy watching the show, especially early on to get a laugh at the muppets who enter, but we would never take it serious enough to vote.
Maybe you should lighten up Michael and stop taking life so serious and stop moaning like an oul doll!! :-)

Vote early and often for one of Ireland's own. Yeah, sure he's the least talented (of the finalists) but he's our boy, eh? Go

Seriously Liam, get a grip, go outside speak to humans make a few friends, perhaps even a girlfriend who knows.

Simon Cowell is the only winner in this drivel. he makes a fortune out of the Liams' of this world phoning and texting like maniacs. Eoghan will sell 20,000 singles of some predictable everley brothers song and then do the odd appearance on cool fm.

The only way Eoghan will win the X-Factor is if his big support in NI keep dialling and voting for him, which is very likely. I think that is the only reason Leon won last year, because the whole of Scotland voted for him. That proves that it is not always the best singer who wins. If the competition was about singing only then Eoghan would be the first voted off tomorrow and then Alexandra would nick it from JLS.
Personally I am tipping JLS to win simply because Alexandra is too similar to Leona Lewis (although Leona is 10 times better) and Simon may not want competition for Leona at this stage of her career. As for JLS, there is no proper 'boybands' out there, Take That, Boyzone etc aren't really classed as 'boybands anymore, so I think there is more potential for them as regards to succeeding.
