X Factor: Would you vote for the Grimes brothers?
Saturday, 31 October 2009
They have divided the nation with their chaotic performances, prompting mass hysteria and hate campaigns in equal measures. But it’s not just the man or woman in the street who is talking about unlikely favourites John and Edward Grimes.
The Irish twins — who will perform the Queen classic We Will Rock You tonight — have also split the world of celebrity with many big names getting behind them and plenty more insisting they shouldn’t be on the show.
So who’s in the Vote Jedward camp and who thinks they should pack up and go?
With stars like Robbie Williams and Westlife throwing their weight behind the 18-year-olds, the pro-Jedward campaign is storming out ahead.
At his BBC Electric Proms performance last week Robbie stunned the crowd when he told them: “Go for the twins. John and Edward all the way”, while Westlife’s Shane Filan predicts the spiky-haired boys will make it to the final.
And his Westlife bandmate Nicky Byrne told GMTV: “They’re so entertaining. We all want to know what the hell they’ll be doing next.”
Last year’s X Factor runners-up JLS have also given them the thumbs up, and even Noel Gallagher is reported to be behind them.
X Factor favourite Danyl Johnson, who is being mentored by their nemesis Simon Cowell, has revealed that he’s been voting to keep the twins in.
And John and Edward have also won the support of Big Brother reject Becky Shiner, who waited outside the X Factor house for hours to see them.
But for every celebrity backing the pair there’s a well-known name who’s not so keen on their controversial performances. Coronation Street actress and former Hear’say member Kym Marsh has revealed she is “a bit annoyed” that the Dublin duo are still in the show.
“They are great fun to watch but I just think it’s unfair they are taking a spot away from someone who is really talented,” she said. “I know it’s a TV show, but it is still a singing competition at the end of the day.”
And X Factor finalist Laura White, whose departure from last year’s show caused uproar, said she doesn’t think John and Edward should win the show.
“I think Danyl should win, he’s got an amazing voice,” she told GMTV.
Pussycat Doll Kimberley Wyatt is certainly not impressed with their dodgy dance moves and doesn’t hold back with her criticisms.
“I watched when Cheryl Cole and Whitney Houston did their big thing and I’m watching the twins,” she said.
“They just need so much more experience. I’m a little bit confused about them, they need a lot more work.”
Their biggest celeb opponent is, of course, Simon Cowell, who has reiterated his view that a Jedward victory would be a “disaster”.
Speaking at a Press conference to announce his patronage of the Children's Hospices UK charity, he said it was impossible to predict the winner of this year's competition — but that he knew who he did not want to win.
“I'm just praying it's not John and Edward,” he said. “But there's a chance, according to reports this week, that they will.
“To be fair, we put them in a competition where it's a public vote and we have to live, unfortunately, with the public vote.
“If they win it will be a complete and utter disaster.
“I'd probably sulk for about six months and I'd probably get on a very fast plane out of the country.”

The show has now become a farce. I don't see the point in watching anymore as the SINGERS are getting voted off and these idiots are still in what a joke.

i can not believe the public are so tone deaf and blind,to keep this terrible duo in the x factor. racheal did not deserve to go,if the twins keep going it does not say a lot about peoples taste in music. the twins singing is so disgusting and as for the dancing well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the twins have a future in showbiz, but not in singing. Maybe as presenters, a younger version of Ant and Dec, something like that. Or even in acting, if they've any talent in that direction.
Like Pauline I admire their lack of 'poor little us' mentality. They take it all on the chin and come back each week to do their best. Their best, where singing is concerned, isn't great, so in all honesty I have to say I don't think they should win this competition. But they have energy and drive and enthusiasm and they obviously love being in front of an audience, so hopefully they'll be offered a way of channelling all this into something that suits their talents.

The X factor is rubbish. If the twins won, maybe Simon Cowell would realise that.

if the voting was free or all the money went to charity then yes I would vote.
I think the hate campaign against these 2 young boys is disgusting! They are just 2 kids having a bit of fun. I think its refreshing to see 2 funny young boys entertain us instead of listening to other contestants crying poverty, telling their pathetic sob stories - Oh Im a single mum trying to support my child, blah blah blah
I like John & Edward, they throw themselves into every performance and try their hardest to put on a good show and I think the x factor would be quite boring without them.
Cheryl has such a cheek to say they cant sing - does she think no one will remember how awful her voice is.

If you want to see entertainment on this level of can't sing, can't dance, just go down to your local pub when it's karaoke night!! I don't want to know what they are singing next week or any week, I find them irritating. However they are young boys who were put through to the judges houses by all 4 judges, so the blames lies firmly at their doors. The public are only enforcing their decision by voting for them.
