DVD: The Disappearance of Alice Creed (18)

Spending most of this thriller gagged and manacled (sometimes naked) to a bed, Gemma Arterton certainly draws the short straw in this sometimes gripping, often preposterous, but always compelling three-hander.

Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston methodically, and rather expertly, kidnap Alice (Arterton), the daughter of a millionaire. We never learn who her father is. After locking Alice in a purposely soundproofed flat, the two kidnappers' plan starts to unravel. The always excellent Marsan holds this tense film together as the intense, hardened criminal, Vic – but Arterton deserves credit for, rather courageously, letting it, well, all hang out.
