And all the better for it. Ellen Page plays a reluctant beauty queen who finds a renewed self-confidence among the tattooed women of the Texas Roller Derby League. Defying her mother and irritating her best friend, Page becomes the star of the team and nudges them towards undreamt-of success. Hi-jinks ensue, and, although clichés come thick and fast – father wears a 10-gallon hat and hides in his caravan, mother wears a twinset and disapproves of the post-1950s world – the great tide of charm that runs through it carries you to the end quite merrily.
