Year of the Dog (PG)

Year of the Dog is now showing at cinemas across Northern Ireland

Mike White, who wrote School of Rock then fell to earth with Nacho Libre, also makes his directorial debut this week with this oddball, sentimental comedy about Peggy, who has always been disappointed by people and is devastated by the death of her dog.

(PG, 98 mins) Molly Shannon, Peter Sarsgaard, Regina King, Laura Dern, John C Reilly

Saturday Night Live regular Shannon is given her first leading role (she made this before Evan Almighty, which was released first) and Sarsgaard, little seen since the excellent war movie Jarhead two years ago, plays a sensitive environmentalist who gives Peggy an alsatian with behavioural issues to look after.
