Top 100 best movies of 21st century, according to 177 film critics

Films by Lynch, PTA, Miyazaki, Malick and the Coens sit in the top 10

A list of the top 100 movies of the 21st century has been compiled by 177 film critics from 36 countries.

David Lynch’s narratively non-linear, néo-noir masterpiece Mulholland Drive has scooped the number one slot.

The 2001 movie came out on top in a BBC Culture poll, followed by Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love (2000) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood (2007).

Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, depending on your level of cynicism over award ceremonies, none of the top three won the Best Picture Oscar in their respective years.

The top 10 also includes the critically-revered but audience-frustrating Terrence Malick movie The Tree of Life (2011) and Richard Linklater’s 12 years in the making Boyhood (2014).

Notable films you might have expected to be higher up the list include Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation at #23 and The Social Network at #27.

Inside Llewyn Davis and No Country for Old Men (joint 10th) were deemed the Coen brothers’ best film of the past 16 years, Zodiac was David Fincher’s, The Grand Budapest Hotel Wes Anderson's and The White Ribbon Michael Haneke’s.

The Act of Killing made the top 20 meanwhile, the highest ranked documentary.

Bizarrely, Birdman and The Big Short are completely absent.

"We wanted to find out about the best films in recent memory," commented BBC Culture editor Matthew Anderson. "These are the films that most people feel strongly about.

“We hope that this list will spark discussion and debate, not just among critics and film aficionados, but among everyone who enjoys movies and has an opinion about what makes a good one.”
