Channel 5 has acquired the rights to the much-anticipated upcoming X-Files series due to air early next year.

The hit TV show will return with original cast members Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as their FBI characters Dana Scully and Fox Mulder.

The show's creator, Chris Carter, will be working on the new instalment, which is due to be a six-episode series.

As one of the longest-running sci-fi shows in TV history, The X-Files ran from 1993 to 2002.

More recently, Anderson has starred in BBC drama The Fall as a tough detective in Belfast on the trail of a serial killer played by Fifty Shades of Grey actor Jamie Dornan from Co Down.
