Hall echoes to sound of Zulu soul

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Waterfront Hall

If you were tormented by the vuvuzela during the World Cup a couple of years ago, last night's Ladysmith Black Mambazo concert at the Waterfront Hall was probably not for you.

The traditional South African instrument sounded again, courtesy of some devoted fans in the front row, who also cheered loudly and waved their homeland's flag throughout.

Founding member Joseph Shabalala's youngest son, Thamsanqa, took lead vocals on several numbers, but the main man made his presence felt on Nomathemba — ‘Hope' — the first song written for the group.

Proceedings climaxed with a sublime version of Homeless, co-written by Shabalala for Paul Simon's Graceland album, and a stage invasion by some of the horn-wielding fans — a lively end to a life-affirming night.
