A search to find the most unusual or funny business names has found an optician called Spex in the City, a chippy called A Salt And Battered and a hairdressers named Curl Up And Dye.

Business firm ThomsonLocal.com said it has also discovered that the most popular name for a pub is the Red Lion, Royal Oak or Crown, while hairdressers are most likely to be called The Hair Shop, The Hair Studio or Reflections.

More obvious names include The Flower Shop for florists and Mr Chips for fish and chip shops as well as the Taj Mahal for Indian restaurants.

Mark Cox, from ThomsonLocal.com, said: "Everyone knows a Red Lion pub or Taj Mahal restaurant, but we want to find the businesses with unusual names that really stand out on the high street and bring a smile to people's faces.

"The UK's independent businesses have had a hard time in the last two years but, as we slowly come out of recession, it's the businesses with the most memorable, quirky names that will truly stand out."
