Legend rolls back the years

Ray Davies, Whitla Hall

By Joe Nawaz

Ray Davies' audience came in many shapes on Saturday night.

There were misty-eyed baby boomers, youngish Weller and Kasabian fans in parkas and boating jackets and the odd old-school mod.

The gangly, lithe Kinks frontman sauntered on, oblivious to all kerfuffle, looked about him with a big grin and gave a shout out to something called Belfast Arts Week.

“Seeing as I'm in Belfast, I'm going to play an English folk song I wrote a few years back,” he announced. A moment's tension was broken by the opening bars of Dedicated Follower of Fashion and another another uproarious singalong ensued.

“I'm in such a great mood”, he beamed, as the end neared, and he clearly meant it. An encore of Days was a final remainder of his god-like genius.
