Mashed
Various Artists (EMI)
Friday, 16 February 2007
The process is called 'mash-up' but 'mess-up' would be more appropriate. The idea is to take a track, any track, shuffle it around, add snippets of another track, chuck into the musical juicer and, hey presto, here is your new song, ready for immediate service.
First things first. If the tune is already a decent one there should be no need to mash/mess up. If it is not, believe me it will not, as if by magic, suddenly become a cracking one.
Mashed, a new EMI compilation features a number of well-known artists who've had their material spliced and ready for the dance market. Madonna is mashed with Taste of Honey, Duran Duran with Kelis and Bowie with, er, Liberty X (yes, I'm afraid so). Elsewhere, you get Blondie and the Doors side by side but the most bizarre of all is, wait for it, Iggy Pop and Peggy Lee!
