George kicks off Wembley gigs
Tuesday, 6 March 2007
Superstar George Michael will play the first concert at the new Wembley Stadium, it was announced last night.
The singer will play the venue on June 9 as part of his British and European tour.
The tour kicks off at Aarhus Stadium in Denmark on May 18 and will visit Dublin's RDS on Wednesday June 6.
He will also play Manchester, Glasgow, Plymouth and Norwich, as well as France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Holland and Hungary.
George Michael will be the first artist to play at the 90,000-capacity venue, the opening of which has been beset by repeated delays and financial wrangling.
Michael played some of his most memorable gigs at the old Wembley Stadium.
He performed in Live Aid in 1985, Wham's farewell concert with Andrew Ridgeley in 1986, the Nelson Mandela concert in 1988, the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in 1992 and Net Aid in 1999.
Last year, the pop star played a sell-out 25 Live European tour, including a Dublin concert.
Promoter Peter Aiken described it as "undoubtedly the best show of 2006" .
Tickets to see George Michael at the RDS in Dublin go in sale on Thursday at 9am, priced €86.24 and €101.25, €106.25 and €131.25.
