Jaxx are out of Basement for beach party
Wednesday, 23 May 2007
Dance music duo Basement Jaxx are hoping to take in the sights of the north coast next month when they headline the second Beach Party at Portrush.
The world-famous dance act, renowned for their spectacular live performances, will kick off their summer season of festivals and outdoor shows with a massive party at East Strand in the seaside resort on Saturday, June 30.
And according to Felix Buxton, who makes up Basement Jaxx, along with fellow Londoner Simon Ratcliffe, the beach party is a perfect opportunity to indulge in some sightseeing.
"I've DJ'd before in Belfast but I've never been anywhere else in Northern Ireland, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the place," he said.
"I've always wanted to travel around Ireland, but don't think I'll get to do it this time. However, I hear it's a lovely place where we're playing so I'm hoping to come over a day early so I can have a look around.
"When we were asked to do the show, it sounded lovely. We did a party on Bondi Beach in Australia on New Year's Eve and it was brilliant.
"Hopefully we'll get the weather, but I'm sure the crowd will be well up for it. Any time we play Ireland, like Electric Picnic last year, the crowd is great and we always have a brilliant time."
Felix said that Basement Jaxx fans could expect to be treated to one of their typical high energy, colourful shows.
"We'll have about 15 people on stage with us, so it should be quite a spectacle," he said.
"There'll be something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, just a very colourful show.
"We'll be trying out some new material, but playing all the hits as well."
Since the early 90s, the Brixton DJ double act have been at the forefront of house music in the UK and have recorded numerous albums and singles, including Bingo Bango, Romeo, Where's Your Head At and Do Your Thing.
Felix said: "Things change, fashion, music, style, whatever, but we just kept doing our own thing and it seems to work."
Last year's inaugural Beach Party, featuring Fatboy Slim, brought 15,000 revellers to Portrush and this summer's event is expected to draw a similar crowd.
Supporting Basement Jaxx on June 30 will be "Madchester" legends, Happy Mondays, dance DJ Pete Tong, Scratch Perverts, Datarock and Belfast outfit Alloy Mental, who release their debut album We Have Control next week.
Tickets for the Beach Party are priced £34 and are available from Ticketmaster outlets.
