A Killer finish to two great nights
Thursday, 23 August 2007
It was a killer night. Up to 25,000 people packed into Ormeau Park in Belfast for what was undoubtedly the biggest night of Ulster's musical calendar.
The highly anticipated debut of Las Vegas indie rockers The Killers lived up
to the hype as an even bigger crowd than day one of the Tennent's Vital
Festival turned out to welcome the double Brit winners to Belfast.
The rain stayed off for the second night in a row, delighting the festival
goers who were there to see some of the biggest names in music.
Supporting The Killers were Leicester band Kasabian, New York DJ/producer
Mark Ronson, The Shins and Albert Hammond Junior.
Among the
celebrities who turned out to see the band was Irish rugby captain Brian
O'Driscoll, who stepped out with the vast majority of his squad, including
Shane Horgan.
Mark Ronson said he was thrilled to be in Belfast and
got a rapturous reception from the crowd.
On the Radio One stage,
local bands Kharma 45 and Alloy Mental wowed the crowd.
Glenn
Rosborough, lead singer of Kharma 45, said it had been one of their best
gigs to date.
"The crowd was mental, even better than Oxegen,"
he said.
"It's always great to play on home soil."
Kasabian kicked off their set with the hit single Shoot The Runner, taken from
their second album Empire, before playing all the crowd-pleasers, including
LSF, Me Plus One, Club Foot and Processed Beat.
But it was The
Killers who, not surprisingly, got the biggest cheer of the night as they
played their first ever gig in Northern Ireland.
