Classical music

If you are new to classical music or simply enjoy the 'classic' classics, then the Ulster Orchestra's concert on November 30 in the Waterfront Hall is not to be missed.

The programmed combination of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky's most popular masterpieces is sure to be an audience-friendly experience.

Beethoven's Fidelio Overture will open the concert. The overture is one of four which Beethoven wrote for his Fidelio opera, as a result of constant revisions to his only opera. He remarked at the time: "Of all my children ... it is the most dear to me". His perfectionism paid off - once the Fidelio version was performed in May 1814, it proved an immediate success that has remained popular with audiences to this day.

The second dose of Beethoven for the orchestra's concert is the immortal Symphony No 5 in C minor, otherwise recognised as the " dum-dum-dum-dummmmmmm, dum-dum-dum-dummmmmmm!" Not much needs to be said of this work - it is probably the best-known composition in European classical music and appears frequently in all forms of media. Beethoven wrote the four-movement work during 1804-08 and it has been lavishly lauded ever since.

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1 in B flat minor will intersperse the Beethoven and will be performed by Nikolai Demidenko. An applauded pianist, he is celebrated for his immaculate technique. Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto was written over a four-month period, beginning in 1874. It was subsequently revised in 1879 and again in 1888. The most famous of Tchaikovsky's three piano concertos, it is a much-loved masterpiece.

Moving on now, the new Strule Arts Centre in Omagh will present a Viennese Strauss gala on December 6. A show which encapsulates the romantic nostalgia of the Viennese festive season, it will feature some of the great operettas of Strauss, Kalman and Lehar, including Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow. Featuring soloists from companies such as Opera North and English National Opera, with conductor Matthew Freeman from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, it should be a memorable occasion.
