Alloy Metal are returning to stiff kitten
Essential Gigs

Belfast's favourite technorock/punk combo Alloy Mental are set to revisit
the scene of their past glories tonight as they return to Stiff Kitten for
the first time since their blistering, sold-out live show there last
September.
The trio, comprising bequiffed man-about-town Martin J Corrigan, Danny Todd
and electro DJ/producer Phil Kieran have spent the last year touring their
debut album, We Have Control, all over the UK and Europe. Important dates
included London's Fabric Club, Scotland's T in the Park and the mighty
Glastonbury, as well as playing our own outdoor music festival Vital last
summer. The band's unique and distinctive sound, which has been likened to
Nitzer Ebb on a collision course with Iggy and the Stooges, has cropped up
on video game soundtracks and even on an episode of Hollyoaks. Doors open at
10pm, tickets cost £12, and Radio K's tune jockeys Joe Dougan and Jim Harte
provide support.
If good old fashioned rock and roll — but without the bleeps — is more your
shot of JD, check out US alternative country outfit Lucero who are playing a
live show just up the road at Auntie Annie's, also on Friday. Support comes
from local singer Robyn G Shiels, no stranger himself to the whiskey-soaked
sound of the alternative country saloon bar, with fragile, melancholic songs
delivered over a minimal backing of guitars, piano and scant drums. His
singles, including We Are of Evil and Playing Host to Ideas, are available
on No Dancing Records, and his second album is down for release later on
this year. It's an early show, doors open at 7pm, tickets are £7 and the
venue will be open at 10pm as usual for the Friday Night Rock Club,
featuring DJ Tony Wright from local noiseniks, And So I Watch You From Afar.
Indie pop duo Oppenheimer have spent the last few months zig-zagging their
way across America, treating audiences to their superlative sonic stylings
and picking up fans in the way a magnet picks up pins. They are currently in
the middle of an Irish and UK tour which touches down in Warrenpoint's The
Square Peg tomorrow night. Doors open at 8pm and admission costs £7.
As the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival prepares to be packed away for
another year, this weekend's highlights include a performance by ex-pat
singer-songwriter Andy White at the Oh Yeah centre tonight and Cava play The
John Hewitt on Sunday.
