Yoda has force to be star man in wars to mix-up with the best

Friday, 16 May 2008

Yoda is a true Jedi master ... and then some. Patric Baird on the DJ who incorporates visual mash-ups, far-out humour and a playlist including nursery rhymes, jingles and TV soundtracks

BY and large, the most you can expect from a guest DJ is that they might just play your favourite song so you can have a dance and go home happy — as for entertainment value, many of them are as exciting as mud.

The major exception to this generalisation is DJ Yoda, a man whose DJ sets are packed full of technical excellence, humour, visual treats and an insane playlist that many of his peers simply would not get away with.

In fact, he's probably the only DJ in the world who could fill a dance floor by mixing up George Formby with Jurassic 5 and blending 1980s pop tunes with TV themes, nursery rhymes and cutting edge, New York hip-hop.

Yoda's main claim to fame is his stunning AV, or audio-visual set, in which he mixes live video clips in sync with the music while projecting the images on to big screens, providing clubbers with a treat for both the ears and eyes.

His reputation has secured him slots at some of the world's biggest events — he shared a stage with Chris Rock and Steve Martin at the HBO Comedy Festival in Las Vegas and headlined the Lake of Stars Festival in Malawi.

Releases include his How To Cut And Paste series of albums, followed up in 2006 with his mash-up masterpiece, The Amazing Adventures of DJ Yoda and his most recent offering is the live mix CD, Fabric Live 39.

His Magic Cinema Show touches down at Stiff Kitten tonight and, if Q Magazine is to be believed, DJ Yoda is one of the ten DJs you must see before you die. Tickets are £12, a small price to pay for big fun.

If you don't fancy hanging around until the year 3000 to hear what the music's going to sound like, then DJ Zed Bias's set has been likened to a fair prediction of what people will be dancing to in the 30th century.

Bias, AKA Dave Jones, is one of the UK's leading DJs and producers, specialising in the kind of dirty basslines which underscore a playlist rich in hip-hop, house, grimy beats and electronica.

He's remixed Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston, Gabrielle and The Streets, as well as working with Ms Dynamite and Amy Winehouse while his own debut album, Experiments With Biasonics Vol 1, was released last year.

He makes his very first appearance in Belfast tonight at the second outing of Dub Discotech at city-centre venue McCracken's Bar in Joy's Entry. Doors open at 9.30pm and admission is £4 before 10.30pm, £6 after.

The BPMs will be replaced by RPMs this weekend when Northern Ireland's premier party town of Portrush becomes a home from home to the riders and spectators of the annual North West 200 road races.

The clubs are notching their entertainment up by several gears with afterparties for race fans — Club Soi and Lush! are battling for pole position on the grid with the former hosting an appearance tomorrow night by Jordan X.

Meanwhile, Lush! welcomes two of the world's leading trance DJs as John O'Callaghan joins Dutch tech-trance master Richard Durand, who will be making his debut at the seaside superclub.

Tomorrow night at Belfast's Empire Music Hall, Northern Ireland's premier reggae collective, Explosion Sound System, will be making another guest appearance at dub and dancehall club night, Version. The three selectors will be serving up authentic Jamaican sounds including roots, rocksteady and reggae, while MCs Krow and Kat go head to head on the mic for a boy versus girl bout of toasting, rhythm and grinding.
