Kraftwerk play one-off gig at Wicklow estate
Thursday, 17 July 2008
An heir of the famous Guinness brewing family is to stage a one-off concert by electronic music godfathers Kraftwerk in his stunning country home, it was announced last night.
The gates to the spectacular Luggala estate in Co Wicklow will be opened to almost 5,000 ticket-holders in September for what organisers say will be a unique music event.
Promoters also claim it will be one of the greenest events in the world this year with cars banned and fans being bussed in the almost 30 miles from Dublin over mountains and past lakes.
Luggala, bought by Ernest Guinness as wedding gift to his daughter Oonagh, was a renowned gathering place for Ireland’s artists, musicians and thinkers during the 20th century.
Guinness heir Garech Browne, who lives on the estate now, is known for continuing the tradition and hosting famous actors, artists and musicians, including Bono who described the estate as his inspiration.
The owner has called the concert A Day In The Life in memory of his brother Tara Browne, whose untimely death in 1966 was immortalised by The Beatles in the song of the same name.
Buried on the estate, Tara was a friend of the Fab Four and a popular London socialite who drove his sports car at high speed through a red light in South Kensington, killing himself at the age of 21.
The newspaper report of the coroner’s verdict inspired John Lennon to pen the classic lines "He blew his mind out in a car/ He didn’t notice that the lights had changed" for the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
The two-hour concert, in what is being touted as one of the most breathtaking music locations in Ireland, is Kraftwerk’s only show in Western Europe this year.
The notoriously reclusive quartet from Dusseldorf pioneered electronic music in the 1970s.
Tickets for the September 13 show go on sale this Friday with capacity limited to 4,999.
