Album: The black kids, Partie Traumatic
Friday, 4 July 2008
It's about time retro pop got a good kick up the 1980s ...
Black Kids' musical template certainly has its origins in the era that gave us New Order, The Human League and, er, Dead or Alive.
But rather than join the long list of copycat 1980s bands, the multi-talented Floridian five-piece have given the genre a much-needed makeover — resulting in a sort of glam rock for the noughties.
Without a doubt, their delicious debut album will be the soundtrack to the summer.
Partie Traumatic is packed to the rafters with uplifting bouncy songs that have feel good written all over them.
The record includes the brilliantly infectious single, I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You.
But in truth, each of the other nine tracks could be released as a single.
Ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler is the album's producer — and his influence is omnipresent.
Butler's penchant for catchy hook and a decent melody has certainly rubbed off.
And in singer Reggie Youngblood the band is blessed with an extraordinary frontman with a vocal range to match Butler's solo work partner in crime David McAlmont.
Parite Traumatic pushes all the right buttons — if you're a dedicated follower of classic pop.
Each composition is steeped in a superb sense of dynamics — and Butler's production is immaculate.
Songs are strictly singalong — and while sympathetic to the sound of the 1980s, they never veer into hero worship territory.
It would be unfair to single out any track for special mention — each is on a par with the other.
This collection of absolutely harmlessly brilliant fun songs demands to be heard as a whole.
And when you've reached the end, you'll be reaching again for the play button.
