Belfast on Spandau Ballet reunion gig list

Spandau Ballet are to get back together and play Belfast as part of their Reformation tour, the Belfast Telegraph can reveal.

Rumours of a reunion were confirmed as “true” when the band unveiled details of their new tour onboard HMS Belfast in London.

The pioneers of New Romanticism, who fell out spectacularly over royalties, will play the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on October 14.

The band join a long line- up of acts who have split, then got back together, including Take That, The Police, Boyzone, Ultravox and Blur.

Lead singer Tony Hadley said: “The boys are back in town and we can’t wait. It’s going to be brilliant, we’re very excited, but it will be very different.

“There will be all the hits, the nostalgia, but there will also be a new take on what Spandau Ballet are about.”

The band were one of the biggest acts on the scene in the 1980s, splitting up towards the end of the decade.

Their debut single To Cut A Long Story Short was an instant top five hit in the UK charts and was followed by the Gold certified album Journeys To Glory.

The follow-up album Diamond featured the funk-influenced Chant No 1. But it was the third album, True, that brought international success for the band and spawned a number of chart-topping singles such as Gold and True.

After a break from recording during which brothers Martin and Gary Kemp found fame as actors, having starred in the gangster film The Krays, the band released the album Heart Like A Sky. It was disregarded for the most part and in 1989 the band split. During the 1990s three members of the band, Tony Hadley, drummer John Keeble and saxophonist Steve Norman, sued the group’s songwriter Gary Kemp, claiming they were entitled to money from royalties. The court found in favour of Kemp.

In the meantime Martin Kemp landed a role in Eastenders as Steve Owen while Hadley relaunched his career in 2003 in the reality television show Reborn in the USA. He also played Billy Flynn in the West End musical Chicago.

Today’s announcement puts to bed weeks of speculation over a possible reunion and marks the end of one of pop music’s most bitter feuds.Tickets to see Spandau Ballet’s Reformation concert at the Odyssey Arena in October go on sale on Thursday, April 2 at 9am
