Bruno Mars most pirated artist

Bruno Mars is the most pirated artist of 2013

Bruno Mars has been named the most pirated artist of 2013.

The Treasure singer received almost 5.8 million illegal downloads in the last year according to figures released by data analyst Musicmetric.

Rihanna came a close second with 5.4 million downloaded, while number three, Daft Punk, saw significantly less downloads with 4.2 million.

Completing the top five were Justin Timberlake with 3.9 million downloads and Flo Rida with 3.5 million downloads.

Musicmetric drew up the list from albums and tracks downloaded using BitTorrent, which enables free file sharing.

The company says a typical breakdown of BitTorrent traffic is 70 per cent albums and 30 per cent tracks. While piracy is common on BitTorrent, not all music traded using BitTorrent is pirated. Some artists make their music available for free through the service.

Kanye West, Eminem, Jay Z, Drake and Pitbull completed the top 10, while One Direction were the 11th most pirated artists of the year.

Adele was placed 15th with just under 2.6 million downloads while Katy Perry was at number 20 with 2.3 million.
