Croll turned to music after injury

Dan Croll originally planned to be a rugby player

Singer-songwriter Dan Croll has revealed he turned to music after an injury ended his sports career.

The rising star - who is about to release his debut album Sweet Disarray - was a keen rugby player until a broken leg meant he had to have a rethink.

Asked if had always wanted to be a musician, Dan replied: "Not really. I played rugby quite seriously till I was 17, had England and club scouts coming to watch me and things like that, but I broke my right leg in a match one day and that was it.

"Between 17 and 18 I had to make a lot of decisions about what I was going to do. I'd always liked music, so I scrapped any university applications for sports courses and changed them to music courses."

Dan also opened up about battling anxiety, admitting it sometimes affects him on stage.

He said: "I do suffer from anxiety, some things hit me quite hard and it has made me feel lonely at times."

Talking about how it feeds into performing, he said: "It's everything. The first thing I do in a room is look for an exit, so that makes me calmer. When I'm on stage and I feel an attack coming on, I turn around and look at my drummer, Dave, who is a great friend, and we talk about this a lot. I turn around and focus on him and not the crowd behind me and the anxiety goes."

:: Dan Croll releases his debut album Sweet Disarray on March 10, and tours the UK from March 18. For more information go to www.dancroll.com.
