Delay in Justin Bieber driving case

Justin Bieber's case has been delayed until August

Justin Bieber's lawyers and Florida prosecutors have said they need more time to work out a possible plea deal on charges that the pop star drove under the influence and resisted arrest.

Assistant State Attorney David Gilbert and the singer's attorney Mark Shapiro asked for an additional three weeks.

Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield has now reset the matter for August 5.

Gilbert said at a brief hearing - which Justin didn't attend - that the two sides would inform Altfield on that date how the plea negotiations were progressing "and set a trial date, if necessary".

The Baby singer was arrested early on January 23 in Miami Beach after what police described as an illegal street race between the star's rented Lamborghini and a Ferrari driven by a friend, RnB singer Khalil Amir Sharieff. Neither was charged with drag racing.

Alcohol breath tests found Justin's level below Florida's 0.02 limit for underage drivers but urine tests showed the presence of marijuana and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax in his system.

The singer, 20, was also charged with resisting arrest and driving on an expired licence.

Earlier this month, Justin resolved another criminal case by pleading no contest to a misdemeanour vandalism charge for throwing eggs at a neighbour's house in Los Angeles. In that case, the pop star agreed to pay more than 80,000 dollars (£47,000) in damages and meet a number of other conditions.
