Rapper DMX has turned himself in at a courthouse to begin serving a 90-day jail sentence for a 2002 case, an official has said.

Los Angeles City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said the 39-year-old rapper turned himself in on Monday afternoon.

The sentence stems from a probation violation on a 2002 reckless driving conviction.

Mr Mateljan said the judge ruled that the rapper cannot be freed on electronic monitoring, work release or home detention.

DMX's real name is Earl Simmons. He has been repeatedly arrested and jailed in the past decade, recently serving a sentence in an Arizona jail for violating probation by failing a drug test.
