Eminem to play his first Northern Ireland gig
Eminem will play his first show in Northern Ireland this summer when he headlines music festival Tennent's Vital, it was confirmed last night.
The US artist, ranked by MTV as the seventh biggest icon in the music industry, will play the second day of the festival, which returns after a four-year hiatus.
The colourful, sometimes controversial, star has sold over 86 million albums worldwide and his debut Northern Ireland appearance at Ward Park in Bangor on August 24 is being hailed as a massive coup for Tennent's and promoters MCD.
Eminem will be joined by a full supporting bill, expected to be announced next week.
The line-up for day one of Vital is also due to be unveiled at a later date.
Since exploding onto the scene in 1999 with the ground-breaking The Slim Shady LP, Eminem has dominated the music charts.
The Marshal Mathers album became the fastest-selling solo album in US history and in the UK he’s now racked up five number one albums and seven chart-topping singles.
He has also won 13 Grammys and picked up an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Lose Yourself.
At the Billboard Awards held in Las Vegas last Sunday, Eminem once again dominated, picking up six awards including Top Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album.
His most recent release Recovery consolidated his reputation as an icon of his generation.
It was the best-selling album worldwide in 2010 and spawned the massive singles Love The Way You Lie, featuring Rihanna, and Not Afraid.
Aisling Duffy, head of marketing for Tennent's NI, said: “We’re delighted to confirm Eminem as the first headliner for Tennent’s Vital 2011.
“Working with promoter MCD, we have pulled out all the stops to deliver an A-list line-up for the festival’s return and Eminem must be the biggest star we’ve ever had at Tennent’s Vital.
“The excitement among fans to the news of the festival’s return has been amazing.
“We’ve had over 14,000 fans on Facebook already, so we can’t wait to share the rest of the two-day line-up with them over the next few weeks.”
