Ex-Libertine to star in an opera

Carl Barat is also set to appear in a new film

Former Libertines frontman Carl Barat is to star in his first opera.

The singer will take the lead role in a reworked version of The Coronation Of Poppea by Monteverdi in Paris.

The production, called Pop'pea, will run at the Theatre du Chatelet opera house from May to June next year.

Carl is also set to appear in a new film, called The Man Inside, alongside former EastEnders actress Michelle Ryan.

He rejoined the other three members of his old band, including joint frontman Pete Doherty, for a series of reunion gigs last year.

The band, whose hits included Don't Look Back Into The Sun, collapsed when Carl fell out with Pete over his wayward behaviour as he battled with drug problems.

Carl went on to form a new band, Dirty Pretty Things, and release solo material and a book about his time with the Libertines.
