Thousands of fans from Northern Ireland are expected to converge on Glasgow this weekend as the cream of the world’s pipe bands prepare to do battle.
About 30,000 visitors and 8,000 pipers, drummers and performers from around the globe are expected to take over Glasgow Green tomorrow for the prestigious World Pipe Band Championships.
Among them will be 35 pipe bands and 37 drum majors from Northern Ireland who are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band in snatching a world title.
The Lisburn band is defending the ‘Grade 1’ world title it won last year — a seventh world title.
It’s hoped that some 6,000 piping fans from here will be travelling to Scotland to cheer on their local pipe bands which are among the best in the world.
Field Marshal Montgomery’s form is looking good, having won its 50th major championship at the British Championship in Scotland recently.
The win was the band’s seventh major title in a row on the back of 2011’s undefeated season.
